How Did Sherlock Holmes Pave the Way for 50 Shades of Grey?

The fab folks at PBS Idea Channel just put up this video on how Sherlock Holmes started the fanfiction craze. We're an epic sort of fandom... just upset it was 50 Shades that got the big break!

You've probably heard of the risque novel "50 Shades of Grey" since it's now the best selling paperback of all time. But you may not know that it's Twilight fan fiction! It seems shocking that a fan fiction novel has become so popular, but 50 Shades isn't the first book to break through the fan community boundaries into mainstream culture. Over 100 years ago, Sherlock Holmes' popularity created a profusion of well received fan fiction. It allowed authors from amateur to professional to explore the world originally created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and pave the way for other future fan fiction canons, including Star Wars, Harry Potter, and yes, 50 Shades of Grey.

Video: Sherlockian Freeze in Trafalgar Square for Undershaw

The video for our flash mob & more! Take a look!

On April 21st we, in partnership with @ReichenBex, hosted a meet up in support of Save Undershaw (www.saveundershaw.com), which has been trying to save the former home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of the Sherlock Holmes stories and much more. The idea was a flash mob freeze. Around 70 of us gathered onto the National Gallery terrace at 2PM, some holding signs, others in full Sherlockian gear (Victorian & modern alike!), and then froze for five minutes. Tourists and locals alike took notice, were confused, and then were enlightened.

It was an amazing.

Here is some video from the event, as well as an anecdote from two girls who flew all the way from Chicago just to come and support Undershaw. Brilliant, and very touching.

PROJECT REICHENBACH: The Baker Street Babes Have Cracked

Warning: Contains large amounts of crackiness and sadness with a sprinkling of foul language and a heaping spoonful of WTF.

The Baker Street Babes have cracked.

Project Reichenbach was born as a coping technique for tomorrows episode. Provisions, shock therapy, and ultimate defeat in dealing with the fact that The Reichenbach Fall is airing at 9PM on Sunday, January 15th whether we want it to or not.

Dear Sherlockians. You are not alone. Learn what your provisions must be. Get mentally prepared. And don't let what happens to Curly, happen to you. Oh, and enjoy the hedgehog.

There are supplementary videos to this one that we will be posting along the rest of the day and tomorrow, as well as a Post-Reichenbach one. So keep an eye out.

The AMAZING Caitlin wrote a song for us for this... but fuck it was really damn sad... so we are going to play it for our Reichenbach episode.
